Instructions
Cast on 72 stitches. Join into a circle, careful not to twist your stitches.
Work 8 rounds of garter stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl)

Please pardon my new knittiness but I can't seem to make this work. Correct me if I'm wrong but is it, "K2tog, yo, K2tog, yo...right until end? Every second Yo row, I end up with one stitch left and when I get to row 39, I have way more stitches than 18.
(K2tog yo)(k2to yo) is right, except on Row 30 where there aren't any yo's. That should cut the number of stitches in half, from 72 to 36. Then in Row 39 the stitches reduce from 36 to eighteen, halved again.
With an even number of stitches you shouldn't end up with a spare stitch, unless you're missing a yo at some point or aren't knitting two together. A missing yo is easier to see than a missed K2tog, though.

I'm a little confused by the term "plain stitch" Do you mean purl?

I knit this hat perfectly. I had the most beautiful turquoise yarn and the firkin thing is too small for my head!!I tried blocking, and stretching. No Go.
could i do this on straight needles....???

Great hat! I would love to knit this for friend of mine. One question though - at the beginning you said 8 rows of garter stitch but then you state 1 row knit, 1 row purl, which is stockinette stitch. Which is correct? Thanks!
Jennifer, the hat is worked in the round so it needs to be 1 row knit & 1 row purl to get garter stitch. All knit rows would produce stocking stitch.
Wonderfully quick and simple pattern, I modified the size slightly for my 6 year old daughter, took a few hours and turned out beautiful!
I was wondering what yarn you used in the orange variegated one?
I had the same issue with the K2tog, yo, so I added a yo at the end to get the count back to 72. And it also helps it blend together
